Black History Month kicks off with comedy

Brunel’s Black History Month kicked off on Tuesday Night, with an evening shining a light on comedy.

Among the performers were Axel Blake, who recently embarked on his biggest performance for his headline show, 'I'm not gonna lie' at the O2, and Thanyia Moore, known for her mainstream and black comedy scenes and many more.

Although the majority of the jokes made by the comedians revolved around the history of conflict between the African and Caribbean community, a range of students from different ethnicities attended this event, which gave them a sense of belonging exposing them to the black culture.

One of the comedians that made the highlight of the night was 23-year-old, Dean Asamboa. Of British and Ghanaian descent, he talked about his experiences of being an African in an east London high school. Relating how being an African was not valued at the school, he explained that all Africans were given the nickname ‘Af’.

Black History Month continues throughout October with variety of workshops and events including a chilled movie night, a Windrush art show and multi-talented showcase of black heritage, talent and music.
