Traffic resumes following horrific crash on the M4

The eastbound carriageway of the M4 has been reopened after a serious crash, involving two lorries and a minibus, which left two dead and one with life-threatening injuries.

The accident led to the M4 in West Berkshire being closed, at 12:20 yesterday afternoon, when South Central Ambulance service were called to the scene.

The crash involved two lorries and a minibus, with young adults with severe autism from Priors Court school, in Thatcham on the eastbound carriageway, between junction 14 at Hungerford and junction 13 at Chieveley.

According to Live Traffic on twitter, there were high levels of congestion between the M4 and J4A.

Drivers were urged to avoid the M4, instead take different routes via the A4 to re-join at another junction. Motorists were left stuck on the motorway for over several hours before traffic started to release.

In a statement from the Priors Court School, Mike Robinson, Chief Executive said; “We are devastated about the road traffic collision, I send my deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two people who lost their lives.

“Two staff members died and three further staff members are currently receiving treatment.

“We are grateful that all the young people involved are safe and without serious injuries, and we will be doing everything we can to safeguard their wellbeing at hospital and upon their return.”

The school announced that the Specialist Police Family Liaison Officers will be able to help those affected by this “tragic” incident.
