Brunel students help 'Wrap up London' keep the homeless warm

Brunel University has joined forces with the charity Wrap Up London to collect unwanted coats for the homeless.

Wrap Up London, now in its eighth year was set up by the organisation ‘Hands on London’ with the aim of offering opportunities across London for locals to volunteer inspiring them to make a difference within their own communities.

Senior graphic designer, Nayna Morjaria says she arranged a collection point at Brunel after having donated to the charity in the past.

“Wrap Up London is a charity I heard about a couple of years ago, they also have drop-off points at a handful of big tube stations across the capital throughout November as well.

I just thought it was a really wonderful and easy way to help people. As you approach Christmas there are so many charities that ask for donations and I often feel guilty that you really can’t contribute to them all.

Wrap Up London works with all kinds of other charities to redistribute the coats to those who would benefit from them. Most of us are lucky enough that we can buy ourselves a new coat every so often and this is a great way to give your old one a new home to someone who will be truly grateful.

The collection allows students to donate their old coats that go towards helping keep the homeless warm this winter.”

Once the charity has collected the coats from Brunel and different points across London, the volunteers spend many hours sorting coats into different piles for men, women, children and young children. The coats are then distributed to charities across London to then give to help support people who are homeless, refugees, living in poverty or fleeing domestic violence.

From wind breakers to anoraks, Coats of all sizes are appreciated, so dig through your wardrobe and bring your old coats to either the Design and Print Service located behind the Hamilton Centre in the Heinz Wolff car park or the Meeting House, near the Gaskell Building.

They will be collecting from Monday 12th November until Wednesday 21st. Staff and students across the University are welcome to drop off their coats.
