Brunel Students react to New Zealand Attack

Following the horrific attacks on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, students of Brunel University have been left in shock. Here is what they had to say:

Mishel Majid, 20, studying education studies, said: “It was upsetting to see because it is early in the morning and it was just out of nowhere. A lot of people are talking about it and it is quite controversial. Why is it not being called a terrorist attack?”

She continued: “I have never thought about not being safe so I guess I do think I am safe but then again anything could happen at any given time.”

Refika Arabici, 30, who also studies education studies, said: “It is really upsetting. It is a hate crime and we fight with this issue of Islamophobia. We can solve this problem by being aware of other religions and other beliefs and people should communicate with each other more.”

She added: “Also, the media is really important because when you see something like this happening in the news about ISIS or other terrorist groups some people cannot distinguish between religion and terrorism. Some people are filled with hate I think and I also feel very sad for the people who have lost their fathers and brothers, it is very upsetting.”

She continued: “I think in today’s world it is the same everywhere because you cannot escape terrorism or other bad things. It can happen everywhere.”

Harry Paines, 18, who studies business and management, said he was shocked to hear about the shootings this morning but said he usually feels safe in London. When talking about safety in London, he added: “Everyone is a bit on edge, I can tell.”

Another business and management student, Pritisha Jesani, 18, was similarly in shock. She said: “Me being an international student from Uganda, I feel safer here because I am always seeing security around.”
