Brunel celebrates Black History Month

Brunel celebrates Black History Month with events highlighting the history and achievements of Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.

The university is holding the following events to celebrate Black History Month: A comedy night on the 1stof October with multiple special guests and they will have an expressive and creative writing workshop on the 7th. This will be followed by a movie night featuring the documentary of ‘Hidden colours,’ on the 16th. And on the 22ndthere will be a talk where special guests will talk about Black Panthers real African history and more.

Abdulaziz Mohammed I Alzaid, SSP (Student Success and Partnership department) assistant said: “To me personally, Black History Month is all about celebrating all the amazing things black people have done, and we have loads of events coming up. “

Jemmar Samuels, BME SU officer said: “Personally, every month is Black History Month. I am constantly campaigning for racial justice and highlighting Black History that is often overlooked and easily forgotten.”

The East African committee is hoping to have a debate nigh to raise a few questions and discussions and educate its members about the difference many leaders made, in hopes of educating people about their culture.

Lakisha Plummer, a representative of the East African committee, said: “Black History month is about remembrance. It’s about making our voices heard because not everyone has to work twice as hard to reach what most consider the norm.”

October marks black history month, the annual celebration of the history and contributions of people with African and Caribbean heritage in the UK.

Originating from the United States, where it was launched in 1970, Black History Month was for the first time celebrated in the UK in 1987.
