Hillingdon Hospital closes down children’s wards

Sick children are now being treated in geriatric wards after Hillingdon’s much loved

paediatric units had to be closed.

Hillingdon Hospital has closed down its children and young people wards after concern from

specialist structural engineers over subsidence in the building.

The closure saw children on the in-patient Peter Pan ward, out-patient Tinkerbell ward, and

those in the Wendy paediatric facilities at the hospital moved to different areas around the

hospital. These include the geriatric women’s ward.

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Chief executive Sarah Tedford said that the move

was temporary and that they are making more permanent arrangements for the children

and young people.

She said: “Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinkerbell held a special place in many hearts, so it was an

emotional move”, with some staff having worked there for over 20 years

A trust press release read: “The most recent expert advice has resulted in this action, for the

safety of the youngest patients.

“I joined the Trust in November 2018 and I have been working closely with colleagues here

at Hillingdon and across the NHS to ensure we have a long-term plan for the hospital.”

Prime Minister and local MP, Boris Johnson, visited the hospital last week and is aware of

the major issues that the hospital is facing and said that he would do everything he could to

assist the hospitals quest to build a new hospital.

In 2014, The Hillingdon Hospitals NHF Foundation Trust produced a masterplan for its

Hillingdon site to evolve over the next 10 to 20 years. Their plan proposed the demolishing

and replacing of buildings over time as the funds became available.
