Johnson sweeps to victory in Uxbridge and South Ruislip

Boris Johnson has swept to victory in his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

Winning by 7,210 votes, the prime minister was buoyant as strong gains by the Conservative party suggested he was on course to lead a majority government.

Mr Johnson received 25,351 votes compared with Ali Milani’s 18,141 for the Labour party.

Speaking at the count at Brunel University, Mr Johnson said: ‘The government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done and focus on the priorities of the British people.’

As results come in from constituencies all around the UK, the Conservatives look to be on course for their best result since Margaret Thatcher's general election victory in 1987.

Upon coming out second-best, Mr Milani said: ’The fact that someone like me, who grew up on a council estate in a working class family who went to Brunel three years ago, can run against the prime minister, it shows we are building a platform that in four or eight years from now will change the country unlike anyone has ever seen.’

Labour's performance was better in the neighbouring Hayes and Harlington constituency, where shadow chancellor John McDonnell held his seat with a majority of more than 9,000.
