New Mayor of Hillingdon appointed

Councillor Roy Chamdal has been appointed the new mayor of Hillingdon for 2021/22, replacing Councillor Teji Barnes.

The Deputy Mayor, who represents the Brunel ward, was voted in during the annual council meeting this week.

Nominating Cllr Chamdal, Cllr Richard Mills (Con, Brunel) said: “Roy has always been involved in his local community, having been a school governor for both primary and secondary schools with key contributions in finance and also special educational needs.”

He also added: “He has helped to set up a health centre in his home village in India, providing much requiring services and facilities for those unable to travel to the nearest big town.”

Cllr David Simmonds (Con, Ickenham) mentioned Cllr Chamdal’s “enormous work he does for the community project supported by his family that has delivered thousands of meals to people in need in this country.”

The MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner added: “What he also brings to the role of Mayor is an enormous generosity of spirit, both in his work he does for so many communities in this borough and across London.”

Cllr Chamdal was voted by a show of hands after the speeches by a majority.

Earlier on, Cllr Barnes also made a speech providing a summary of her year in office. She said: “At the beginning of my term, I found myself sitting at the desk in the parlour sifting through my emails and being amazed at all the outstanding stories I was receiving informing me of the many wonderful things that were being done in our borough by our residents.”

Cllr Barnes, who represents the Cavendish ward, was elected Mayor of Hillingdon on 14th May, 2020, replacing Cllr David Yarrow.
